Day 3 in Peru Amazon Rainforest

Peru 🇵🇪  Day 3

Now 8 days exploring Amazon rainforest.  Amazon means “without breast”.  Legend has it - Inca woman cut off one of their breast to have more accurate aim with bow and arrows

6:00 AM bird watching on skiffs.  “So this is what morning looks like!!!”    No sleeping in on this trip!   But what a glorious morning motoring the Amazon as it wakes up!!

Locals showing us the fish they just caught to make their fish soup for breakfast.

Just a few of the birds we saw:  Oriole blackbirds, roadside hawks, great egrets, snowy egrets, wattied jacaca, cocoi heron, jabiru heron!!!

Skiffs back to boat for breakfast…AND it is still morning!:). Thank god breakfast was not fish soup!!!!!!!

Robinson (bartender) and Fiorella (CEO of boat) greet us with yummy fresh drinks when we come back to boat from skiff outings.

Ricardo (Ricky) one of our Amazon guides and Carlos (our Uni World guide)

Skiff driver  and medic

Oscar and Herbert our cabin tenders showed us how to make towel animals.  I did not pass this course so no towel animals from me!   They left different towel animals in our cabins every day.

Turtle and sloth were my favorites

Chef showing us how to make the fresh catfish we had for lunch.   It was wrapped in this leaf found in the Amazon that has antibacterial properties.   There are over 3000 species of catfish in the Amazon.  Unlike our catfish, most are top feeders.   This one they served us was so mild, flaky and delicious!   And I do not eat American catfish!!!

Every meal we had different animal napkin rings.

Late afternoon we headed out on skiffs for night cruise.

These Amazonian umbrellabirds are so cool!  We also saw lots of black collared hawks, great black hawks, and a lot of same birds we saw in AM

Vegetarian along shoreline was very interesting.  Lots of vines and this mangrove tree

Small polka dot tree frog

Late afternoon snack on our skiffs.  Nuts wrapped in those antibacterial leaves, and Robinson’s yummy drink concoctions

Priscilla!

Jenny, Carlos, Phil and Ricky

Priscilla, Ricky, Jenny and Phil.  They always took 3 skiffs out so our skiff journeys were very personalized with the three Amazon naturalist- Ricky, George and Julio.  All three of them grew up in the Amazon rainforest and had interesting stories.
It was exciting to see 2 sloths chilling in trees! We also saw a large troop of common squirrel monkeys.  It was fun seeing them swinging from branches and tree to tree.  Also saw red Howler monkeys , spider monkeys and Monk Saki monkeys.   It was hard to get photos so we all watched through our binoculars.  George was the photographer and got amazing pictures.

Monkeys we saw

Night fell and we saw so many fishing bats and nocturnal birds. The “noisy night monkeys “ are truly noisy!!   Just sitting in skiffs quietly listening to the Amazon symphony of night sounds was fabulous.   It was a cloudy night so not too many stars- but Venus was very visible
