Now we are back in the Drake Passage sailing back to Chile.   We were again lucky with the Drake being as gentle as the Drake can be.  Besides our final interesting lectures I tried to get some bird pictures: Albatross: Below is a Petrel: February 16, 2022 We made it back to Puerto William early in the morning and had to leave the ship at 8AM. We sailed a total of 3450 Nautical Miles!! Note the cow on the road🤣.   Back on our charter plane to fly us back to Santiago.   This trip was all I dreamed of and more!!   Being in the luxurious accommodation of Silverseas Explorer with all the attentive, personable and knowledgeable crew then the stark remote and unspoiled land of Antarctica was beyond my expectations! Sad  goodbyes to new friends on February 16th at Santiago airport as we all ventured onwards ……some towards home and some still on their adventures.   February 17, 2022 Nine hour flight to Houston on Polaris Section of United with my own cub...

This morning we were at Deception Cove, South Shepherd Island   Coming ashore on our zodiacs we landed on the very desolate land of Whaler’s Bay. I found the land formations above very interesting as we came onto the land.   This is an old whaling village from the times when whales were killed by the thousands.  The beach is covered with old barrels, equipment and debris from the whaling and research period.  It sits below a still active volcano and the land is all volcanic rock and gravel.   There was a fur seal inside this structure and another outside and it was like they were playing hid and seek! The seal is peeking out of the larger opening  I think we all disturbed their playtime!! The volcanic soil and all the broken down structures made this landing very ghostly.  The larger barrels held water and the smaller were whale oil.  These large tires were mostly submerged in the volcanic gravel  Below was the plane hanger: We did a ver...

Skontorp Cove , Paradise Island is 2 miles south-east of Bryde Island along the west coast of Graham Land.   It was a beautiful sunny day and I got to enjoy it Kayaking through brash ice , growlers and bergy bit ice.   Brash ice is like slushy type ice.   Growlers are small chunks of floating ice that are  up to 3 feet out of water.  Bergy bits are  small icebergs that are 3-13 feet out of the water.   Me in front and Terri in back.  We paddled around beautiful icebergs! This was the best kayaking day this trip.   Humpback Whale on zodiac back to ship after kayaking!! Talk about a perfect ending of a perfect day!! Some amazing views from my balcony

In the morning we took the zodiacs to Wiencke Island in Dorian Bay.   First thing to see was this  small Argentinian hut: Farther up was the British “Damoy Hut”.   The Hut was established to support the airstrip on Damoy Point.   Above is type of plane that landed there.   This airstrip was pretty haphazard with a very small area to land between mountains- not to mention the glaciers. I asked our historian, Peter, if there were crashes recorded.   He said there were no plane fatalities recorded but sure there were mishaps.   There was one fatality on the glacier by the air strip.  Independent travelers sailed here and went on this landing site to ski.  One of the skiers on the glacier fell into a crevasse.   Below are pictures inside the hut: This vat was to put snow in for their water.   The hut had no heat! Above were the bunks…. Not very comfy looking! This island had a colony of Gentoo Penguins  Gentoo penguins are the...
