Antarctica 2–2-22
This is the view out my window when I woke up this morning !
Today we arrived at Neko Harbor which has breathtaking surroundings and beautiful glaciers.
We were greeted by Gentoo Penguins going up and down the cliffs on their penguin highways.
It is so cute seeing the all venture up and down the paths they made
Then I went on a zodiac ride and the scenery and ice sculptures are magnificent Pictures do not do it justice
We also saw 3 humpback whales but they are hard to capture on camera
Now we are journeying to Cuverville Island which is a site of the largest Gentoo Penguin population in the world
Cuverville Island
We landed on Cuverille island and could go left-right-or up. I went left and right. Gentoo Penguins all over
The penguin “highways” are so intriguing to me. They waddle up and down on these well worn paths
Below are two chicks under their parents- front / center
Next up zodiac ride to see amazing icebergs
Above you can see how this iceberg flipped. The smooth left side used to be under waster. The diagonal line in middle was the water line before it flipped. The rough right side shows what used to be original part out of water. When large icebergs flip it can cause tsunami type waves.
Icebergs are large pieces of freshwater ice that has broken off a glacier or an ice shelf and is floating free in the open water. About 91% of an iceberg is below the surface of the water. As it drifts into shallower waters, it may come in contact with the seabed.
