Antarctica 2-5-22

We ship sailed all night and we arrived at Stonington Island about 8AM. Stonington is a small island in Neny Fjord at the southern end of Marquerite Bay.
East Base is found here and has been designated as Historical Site and Monument #55 under the Antarctic Treaty.  It was occupied by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948). This expedition included the first two females to overwinter in Antarctica (Edith Ronne and Jenny Darlington)

Above is the British Camp
Below is the American Camp

There was a flat area on the American camp the planes used.  This was the area for the first airplane to land in Antarctic

While climbing around the rocks here I discovered this:

After showing one of our guides he said it was the lower jaw of a Weddell Seal.   Then we explored the area more carefully and found the seal head.

I found that the whiskers were still there intriguing. The rust colored strip is actually rusted metal.  The expedition leader speculated that the seal got into a can or something else metal and could not remove it.

It was a beautiful area with Weddell seals and Adelie Penguins.  It is also where I made my first Antarctica snow angel.
Below are the lucky chosen from ship to Kayak-(lottery system to chose who goes since limited numbers able to kayak )

Lunch Al fresco…Terri,Eileen, me, Marybeth.

And yes…..it was freezing but fun!!

The afternoon expedition was to Red Rock Ridge.
There was a bit of a climb to a beautiful view point.

My 2nd snow angle below Antarctic Circle.   I had a snow angle making buddy - Eileen (MO).  Others looked at us like we were crazy!

Walking the beach I found remains of a penguin that did not survive for one reason or another.  It is truly Darwin theory location.
