Antarctica 1-31-22
This morning woke up to snow mixed with rain. It was a wet Zodiac ride over to Brown Bluff. Arriving on the Bluff we are greeted by big colonies of Adelie and Gentoo penguin and a fur seal and elephant seal. . The Adelie are the smallest penguin and have a white ring around their eyes. Gentoo have orange beaks and a white patch on it’s head

The afternoon’s excursion was to Paulet Island. Paulet Island is the home of over 100,000 pairs of Adelie Penguins…..verified to me by the amount of guano!!!!

The red is all guano!!! The odor was quite potent - the one time I did not mind wearing a mask ! And red coat supplied by Silverseas was way too big for me!!!

Paulet Island was discovered by a British expedition (1839-1843). The “Nordenskjold’s Expedition “ had an unplanned wintering here for 20 men and 1 cat. Above are pictures of remnants of their stone hut. ……
And now non-human occupants 🐧
