Antarctica 2-8-22

Last night I was awakened by things flying off the shelves and crazy wild boat rocking.   That was because we encountered katabatic* winds that were blowing at 70 MPH. “Force 11”.  It was quite an adventure!
The winds and swells have made it impossible to go on shore on zodiacs as planned.  We are now sailing SW in Margarette Bay in hopes of being able to go ashore this afternoon in Horseshoe Bend.

British camp Y on Horseshoe Bend  was opened 1955 and closed August 1960.  Location:  Position: Lat. 67° 48′ S, Long. 67° 17′ W
General location: Sally Cove, Horseshoe Island, Bourgeois Fjord, Marguerite Bay
It was abandoned intact - like a museum frozen in time

The Island was mostly granite.  Many large pieces of granite had this green copper leaching out of it as seen above.

This rock had iron leaching out of it.

I found this beautiful rock.   So many interesting rocks but it is illegal to take anything (including rocks unfortunately) or move anything that you find in Antarctica.

**The Antarctic Treaty that was signed in 1959 by 12 nations stating that no nation owns it.  International science teams can explore it and it is to be only used for peaceful purposes.

This was a beautiful island to explore.

Every now and then you get to see a small plant life popping up able to survive the climate.

Beautiful views from cliffs on the island

Marybeth, Eileen, Terri and me.

Old canoes left on shoreline.

There was this beautiful iceberg as we left the island

In the evening there were so many humpback whales feeding and swimming around the boat

Another perfect day in Antarctica!!

* Katabatic winds occur when air is cooled from below over sloping terrain. Such cooling causes a shallow blanket of air adjacent to the surface to become colder and therefore heavier than the atmosphere above, thus forming a thermally distinct layer that exchanges little energy with the overlying air.

** The 12 countries to sign the Antarctic Treaty in 1959:
Argentina
Australia
Belgium
Chile
France
Japan
New Zealand
Norway
Russia (as Soviet Union)
South Africa
United Kingdom
United States.
Additional nations have since acceded to it.
